A would-be Rockefeller would get much sympathy in the beginning but his Administration would be in shambles. There would be another 5 month vice president confirmation process as well as the SCOTUS replacement for Justice Douglas who was forced to retire for health reasons.(Douglas stepped down in Oct 1975.) Both would take enormous amounts of political capital--something Pres Rockefeller would lack-- draining time and energy. You're right about Rumsfeld being a problem, many of the staff and Cabinet would resign, either be let go, or forced to resign. Again, filling Cabinet seats would be excruciating in this environment. The infighting between Rockefeller's staff and the holdovers from Nixon and Ford would be toxic. Reagan supporters would be very dissatisfied by Rockefeller's judicial appointments and many of his staff choices.
Pres Rockefeller would have no time to campaign effectively or do much more than to keep the wheels of his disaster moving. The press would tout the increasing inflation and midterm elections as his ruin and dissatisfaction with the voters.
Good read, thanks.
Just my thoughts.Keldonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01195819984303242807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8759932791781893767.post-74868417311276154942020-01-26T13:34:05.925-08:002020-01-26T13:34:05.925-08:00we reverse the premise of this scenario in our blo...we reverse the premise of this scenario in our blog article 26th January, 1979, death of former Governor Nelson Rockefeller in which the House Judiciary Committee reject his nomination for Vice President.Alternate Historianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08220679379992555459noreply@blogger.com
